Tribute to Richard Matheson

I became aware of Richard Matheson’s work as a child, mainly through my dad’s love of The Incredible Shrinking Man and the Twilight Zone. It wasn’t until much later, probably high school, that I actually read any of his books. I started off easy with a few of his more popular works (specifically the ones I that already had big screen adaptations) What Dreams May Come, A Stir of Echoes, Somewhere in Time/Bid Time Return, and I Am Legend (which, despite trying and failing three times, Hollywood just can’t get right).

He quickly grew to be one of my favorite authors, and I did my best to devour a catalog of work that spanned over half a century. Needless to say, I still have a long way to go.

In light of the author’s recent passing, I decided it was time to get my long-gestating tribute to his greatness underway. With the help of my stalwart assistant, we were able to wrap the multiple-shoot project in just a few hours (from wardrobe and set dressing to wrap and clean up). Post took a bit longer to complete, however, and while it didn’t turn out quite as well as I would have hoped, it was something I felt really just had to be done.

So finally, I present my tribute to Richard Matheson. A play on his classic novel, The Shrinking Man, the quasi self-portrait shoot was definitely a lot of fun to work on. It also serves as a tribute to my father for introducing me to Matheson’s work.
