Wine, Burgers, and Sunshine

It was a great weekend filled with wine, hamburgers, an abundance of sunshine, and numerous visits from the local swallows that have taken up residence in our complex.

We started off the weekend with a bang by attending the Burgers Meet Ham•Burgundy event at CapRock Winery. There we met the self-proclaimed Hambassador, Rick Vanderpool. The burgers were great and the wine, though not my favorite, definitely paired well with the main course (especially the Tempranillo). I still prefer their Dry Grenache Rose for sittin’ and sippin’ though!Read More

Lubbock First Friday Art Trail – February

I attended my first First Friday Art Trail here in Lubbock (though hopefully not my last). There was much to be seen and heard this night and it was great to finally see some Lubbock nightlife.

Surprisingly, Lubbock has a large art population, and the turnout was quite impressive. Unfortunately, the unfamiliar cold drove me to seek out warmer locales after a few short hours. That, in fact, ended up leading to much more interesting things.Read More

Photo of the day

So I’ve recently started taking Trey Ratcliff’sHDR Tutorial and have been itching to get out and take some photos. We’ve been having some gnarly weather here between the cold and the extreme winds, but I braved the elements this evening to venture out and snap some shots of the technology building across the street. Keeping the camera/tripod stable was a challenge, but I think the results turned out quite good.Read More

They live!

It’s that time of the year again, when the dead rise from their graves to plague mankind with their insatiable hunger for brrrrrrraaaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnssssssss!

At least, that’s what the founders of Zombie Walk Houston are going for on this, their fourth annual walk of the undead. This year’s walk was to benefit a great charity, the no-kill animal shelter Friends For Life.Read More

Porch fun!

So I finally got around to buying Joe McNally’s book The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes and have been reading it religiously (that is to say, not often enough). Joe’s got a lot of experience, a great sense of humor, and tons of practical tips (if you’re lucky enough to be a Nikon user, that is). If you own a Nikon DSLR and a speedlight, buy his book today.Read More

Camera Comparison Test

Behold!

Lately, I’ve been messing around with a new camera I was given (thanks Susie!) that has some interesting features, despite being a few years older than my other cameras. Behold! The Fujifilm Finepix S2 Pro! It’s a beastly thing (though not as gargantuan as my D90 with the MD-80), but it’s still got that Nikon look since it was modeled after one of the later Nikon SLRs. And lucky me, it’s got a Nikon F mount so I can share all of my lens with it.

What’s more, since it is older and a more prosumer camera than my newer D3100, it can use ALL my lenses, not just the ones with the autofocus motors built in. Anyway, on to the test…
